{"id":782,"date":"2021-01-28T20:00:51","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T20:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/allred10.com\/?p=782"},"modified":"2025-11-24T14:12:56","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T14:12:56","slug":"money-management-for-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/allred10.com\/?p=782","title":{"rendered":"Money Essentials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">I have played a game with my grandchildren where I give them choice of a piece of candy or a $1 bill.\u00a0 When they choose the money, I know that their parents have begun the process of teaching that child about the value of money.\u00a0 This, however, is just the beginning of the lessons that need to be taught.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/allred10.com\/?p=694\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Money<\/a><\/span> will be a powerful force in the lives of our children.\u00a0 They will not intuitively know how to handle it.\u00a0 Parents have the responsibility to teach these basic money management lessons.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">People are more important than cool stuff.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">It is not the one who has the most toys that is happiest.\u00a0 It is the person who has done the most with his or her life.\u00a0 Happiness cannot be measured in terms of dollars, as popular philosophy teaches.\u00a0 \u201cMany persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.\u201d \u2014 Helen Keller<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">As the Bible says, \u201cThe love of money of money is the root of all evil.\u201d \u00a0We need to teach to value others more than we value money and to use our money to show what we value.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Learn to delay gratification<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">If we want our children to be happy, we will help them understand this thought from Zig Ziglar, \u201cThe chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want most for what you want right now.\u201d\u00a0 That warning applies to more than just money.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Children typically want to spend money as soon as they get it.\u00a0 \u201cI have heard that money talks but when I give it to my kids, all it says is, \u2018Good Bye!\u201d\u00a0 We must teach that money can often provide instant gratification, but that gratification leads to regret when they don\u2019t have the cash to buy something that they want even more.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">There is a difference between needs and wants<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">If children are so coddled that they believe that all of their \u201cwants\u201d are \u201cneeds,\u201d we have created an insatiable beast.\u00a0 Some adults also have this problem and they usually end up in bankruptcy court.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">When spoiled children get everything they want, they usually become ungrateful for what they do receive.\u00a0 Ingratitude has its own set of problems.\u00a0 Eugene Hansen gave this wise instruction, \u201cIt has been said that the sin of ingratitude is more serious than the sin of revenge.\u00a0 With revenge, we return evil for evil, but with ingratitude, we return evil for good.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">An allowance is not payment for doing household chores.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Giving the children an allowance is a good way to teach money management.\u00a0 It also frees the parent from being constantly used as the kids private ATM.\u00a0 You give them an allowance and then tell them to live within their means \u2013 a lesson that many never learn.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Since the parents provide the necessities of life and most of the wants of their children, children must be required to do something for the privilege of being pampered.\u00a0 If you pay your kids to do their chores, you are setting yourself up for labor slowdowns and strikes.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to have to negotiate with a child about whether he should pick up the family room, even if it is his baby sister\u2019s stuff.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Save money for improvement and opportunity.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Hopefully, our children will want an education to prepare to take care of themselves.\u00a0 They should also want to prepare for marriage and having children of their own.\u00a0 They must begin when they are young to save for these and other significant events so that they will see the value of these goals.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Children can be taught how to budget by keeping a spending log.\u00a0 The spending log documents all the money they receive and where they spend their money.\u00a0 This spending log will provide a basis for creating a budget.\u00a0 Budgeting is a critical tool and practice in becoming a responsible adult.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Comparison shop.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Learning how to shop is nearly as important as learning how to make money.\u00a0 You can\u2019t fill a sieve with water and you can\u2019t earn more money than you can spend.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Children should be taught how to evaluate the options.\u00a0 They need to distinguish between quality products and shoddy workmanship that appeals to the eye but doesn\u2019t last.\u00a0 They also must understand quantity discounts and the relative value of generic products.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Use credit wisely.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Credit cards are not money.\u00a0 Just because we have checks doesn\u2019t mean we have money.\u00a0 Just because we can qualify for a loan doesn\u2019t mean we should borrow.\u00a0 Borrowing for a house or an education might make sense.\u00a0 Every other kind of debt should be avoided, if at all possible.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Buy only what we can afford.\u00a0 Pay the credit card bill completely every month.\u00a0 Let the kids know that staying out of debt, especially credit card debt, is very important to you.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">You can\u2019t have everything.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Everyone must set priorities because no one can have everything.\u00a0 Buy necessities, including insurance, and save a portion for luxuries and unforeseen expenses. No one knows what the future holds, but we must do our best to prepare for it.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Kids must understand that an automobile is the ultimate money eater.\u00a0 Almost every teenager has found a \u201cgreat deal\u2019 on a used car.\u00a0 They have the money to buy the car but they don\u2019t even think of the cost of gas, insurance, repairs, etc.\u00a0 Many have purchased a car only to become its slave.\u00a0 They neglect school, church and other responsibilities because they have to work to pay for the addiction.
