The American clergyman, Edward Everett Hale, said, \u201cI am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.\u201d\u00a0 The concept of just doing \u201csomething\u201d to help others is inspiring.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

As humans, we often think of something we could do for someone else but rationalize not doing anything.\u00a0 We might think, \u201cSomeone else will take care of it,\u201d or \u201cI don\u2019t want to appear to be foolish, or presumptive, or self-righteous,\u201d or \u201cThey brought this calamity on themselves,\u201d or, or, or\u2026<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

My wife, Sue, and I know how simple acts of kindness can profoundly impact one\u2019s life.\u00a0 The following are examples of what others have done for us that might serve as food for thought.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Guidance<\/span> \u2013 In my early teens, I was making a smart aleck remark at a Boy Scout meeting.\u00a0 Byron privately told me that I was \u201cbetter than that,\u201d and encouraged me to change my attitude.\u00a0 I am a better man because of it.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Helping<\/span> \u2013 When we were just starting out as a young married couple, we only had one car and three children.\u00a0 Many kind friends helped us by taking the family to meetings when I was on assignment elsewhere.\u00a0 That service strengthened our determination to help others whenever we can.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Random encouragement<\/span> \u2013 Several times when we took our nine children out to eat, random people would complement us on the behavior of our kids.\u00a0 Raising children to be good adults is made easier when others are supportive.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Simple gestures<\/span> \u2013 Kris came to visit Sue on her birthday when we were new in the area and brought her a bouquet of flowers from Kris\u2019 yard, placed in a Mason jar.\u00a0 It brightened Sue\u2019s day and created a lasting memory.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Advice<\/span> \u2013 As we tried to find a cardiologist to care for my deteriorating heart condition, Bruce, a doctor, helped us find the best possible care.\u00a0 It allowed me to feel better and have confidence in the future.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Listening<\/span> \u2013 I was in the hospital being treated for heart failure symptoms and Sue was left at home to care for our children.\u00a0 Alana was there to lend a listening ear. \u00a0It was just what Sue needed at that time.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Comfort<\/span> \u2013 When I was waiting for a heart transplant, Katy would always check on Sue to make sure that she was OK and give her encouragement.\u00a0 It helped her when I was not able to help.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Making life sweeter<\/span> \u2013 When Sue was out of town, Randy and Becca made it a point to invite me over to their house for dinner.\u00a0 Kind acts always create better friendships.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Job assistance<\/span> \u2013 Dennis helped me find and get jobs, on two different occasions.\u00a0 The income from those jobs was essential for our family.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Physical labor<\/span> \u2013 When I lost my job, we had to move to a rental house.\u00a0 Ron brought over a moving van and helped us move our large family.\u00a0 The manual labor was much needed but the kindness was even sweeter.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Charity<\/span> \u2013 Terry and Karen heard that I had lost a job and was having a difficult time finding another.\u00a0 One night, they came to our house with several bags of food for our family.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They did the good that they felt they should.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Compliments<\/span> \u2013 Both of my younger brothers have said, \u201cYou\u2019re my hero.\u201d\u00a0 Kind words strengthen bonds of love.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Letters<\/span> \u2013 When we moved from the home where we raised our children, Brian took the time to mail me a letter telling me how much he appreciated our friendship.\u00a0 That letter is a wonderful keepsake and his friendship is priceless.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Neighborliness<\/span> \u2013 Our neighbor, Fred, is well past retirement age but he insists on mowing our lawn because he is already mowing his.\u00a0 He shows his Christianity in his actions. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

If we all did something meaningful<\/a><\/span> for another every day, the impact would be like a tidal wave of goodness washing over a world of selfishness.\u00a0 You never know how much good your simple act of kindness<\/a><\/span> will do, but be assured; a pebble of kindness always creates a ripple.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
