font-size: 16pt;\">Child rearing is relatively intuitive for those who want to be a <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/allred10.com\/?p=225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">good parent<\/a><\/span>, once we get past our selfishness and ego.\u00a0 This means that child rearing books are usually not necessary because generations of good parents have raised well-adjusted and good children without them.\u00a0 I am a CPA by training so you will not find any psychological theory in this article, but you will find what has seemed to work for the nine children that my wife and I have raised.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Every one of us is unique.\u00a0 Methods that help one child might not help the next.\u00a0 Therefore, the wise parent will listen to other\u2019s ideas and decide what is best for each individual child.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">The Greek philosopher Epictetus said, \u201cWe have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.\u201d\u00a0 This is truly wise counsel when raising children.\u00a0 It\u2019s not easy but it is essential.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">These are five important reasons to listen to our kids:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">It shows them that they are loved.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Time invested in our children when they are in their early teens will yield dividends for their entire lives.\u00a0 When you listen, it shows your children how much you value them and their opinions.\u00a0 Take time to hold and kiss your children and tell them that you love them.\u00a0 Love in words and in actions.\u00a0 Even teenagers need to be hugged, whether they admit it or not.\u00a0 This is particularly important when disciplining is necessary.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">At times, they just need to vent.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">\u00a0There are plenty of causes of stress in children\u2019s lives.\u00a0 The home should be the shock-absorber, not the shock-creator in life. \u00a0Children must know that they are safe sharing problems with their parents.\u00a0 As much as possible, control your temper, control your tone, control your preaching and allow them to blow off steam.\u00a0 When they settle down, you can respond honestly and share facts and your feelings.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Given enough time, they can usually solve their own problems.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">The best way for children to grow up and take responsibility for their actions and for their own mental health is for them to evaluate and solve their own problems.\u00a0 Good parents are good sounding boards.\u00a0 Ask questions.\u00a0 <u>Never<\/u> say, \u201cYou always\u2026,\u201d or \u201cYou never\u2026,\u201d because exaggerations undermine your credibility.\u00a0 Give them enough time to come to their own solutions.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Sometimes, they will reveal issues that are very important to know.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">If you listen well, you will learn what is bothering your kids.\u00a0 You want to know these things.\u00a0 Allowing my kids to explain themselves fully, has saved me many times from saying the wrong thing and given me needed information.\u00a0 Even if there is a serious problem, it is better to know the full extent of the problem before looking for solutions.\u00a0 Think before responding and reinforce your love for them before you share the harsh realities of consequences.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">It is the best way to know what kind of people they are becoming.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">You can only know what is going on in their head if they tell you.\u00a0 You can assume that you know, but you don\u2019t.\u00a0 You want to develop a relationship with them that will last so, admit when you are wrong, show them how important they are, use humor to make the situation less tense and praise them every time you can, without artificial flattery.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16pt;\">My nine kids will assure you that I am a very imperfect parent, but I tried.\u00a0 Even as badly as I behaved at times, our ninth child wrote this after she graduated from high school, \u201cI knew I could tell Dad anything.\u00a0 I knew that although Dad didn&#8217;t particularly care who was dating who in my choir class, he would always be there to listen.
