{"id":507,"date":"2021-01-11T14:47:29","date_gmt":"2021-01-11T14:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/allred10.com\/?p=507"},"modified":"2021-03-02T15:37:50","modified_gmt":"2021-03-02T15:37:50","slug":"childrens-curfews-are-critical","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/allred10.com\/?p=507","title":{"rendered":"Children\u2019s Curfews are Critical\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-81\" src=\"http:\/\/allred10.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Core-Allreds-e1400634887264.jpg\" alt=\"Core Allreds\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/>As a parent, I was adamant about curfews for our children.\u00a0 Our kids had a curfew of 10 pm on school nights and midnight on weekends, until they reached age 18 and had graduated from high school.\u00a0\u00a0 Any variance from the appointed curfew had to be negotiated in advance and wasn\u2019t usually approved, unless it was a very special occasion, like a Senior Prom.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">When our kids were out at night, I would usually sit on the couch and watch TV until they arrived home.\u00a0 We would exchange pleasantries, and then I would go to bed.\u00a0 When curfew was violated, we had a discussion about how parents worry about their children, why they worry, and a penalty was imposed.\u00a0 The penalty was usually making the curfew earlier for the next weekend.\u00a0 Consistent enforcement seemed to prevent repeat offenses.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Since we had nine children, I played Curfew Cop for over 20 years.\u00a0 These are the reasons that I felt it necessary to wait for my children to come home before I went to bed.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Kids have no good reason to stay out late. Socialization is very important to teenagers but it doesn\u2019t need to be done late into the night, when fatigue could impair judgment.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Curfews help guard against serious problems. Crime, alcohol and drug use, auto accidents and teenage pregnancy statistics validate that statement.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Children need help in establishing good health habits. Establishing good sleeping patterns is necessary for learning and proper brain development.\u00a0 It is also an important habit to develop for holding a job.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Curfews teach teenagers to be responsible. Learning how to make and keep commitments is part of becoming a responsible adult.\u00a0 Complying with a curfew can be a difficult choice when friends have more lenient parents, so it is a good testing ground.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Waiting up gave me the chance to assess the condition of my kids when they came home. Knowing that they will be looking their dad in the eye and explaining how their evening went was a good way to help our kids make proper decisions earlier in the evening.\u00a0 Sometimes, teenagers will come home with problems or concerns and want to talk without anyone else around.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Enforcing curfews shows love.
