Martin wrote in his article, <em>The Big Lie of Strategic Planning<\/em> (Jan-Feb 2014 issue), \u201cThis is a truly terrible way to make strategy. It may be an excellent way to cope with fear of the unknown, but fear and discomfort are an essential part of strategy making.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">Based on my experience with many different clients, Mr. Martin couldn\u2019t be more\u00a0wrong.\u00a0 But, he is not alone in his attempt to discredit strategic planning.\u00a0 There are four reasons that business leaders tell me why they \u201cdon\u2019t bother\u201d with strategic planning.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">1.\u00a0 It detracts from innovative and truly strategic thinking (Roger Martin\u2019s argument).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">The word strategic comes from a 6<sup>th<\/sup> century B.C. Greek root meaning \u201cgeneralship.\u201d\u00a0 It also means, \u201cOf great importance within an integrated whole or to a planned effect.\u201d\u00a0 A plan is, \u201cA detailed program of action.\u201d\u00a0 Therefore, a strategic plan, done correctly, is simply a detailed plan of action to accomplish the mission and vision of a company as established by its leaders.\u00a0 It is a logical way to avoid unnecessary fear and discomfort, which are not conducive to strategic thinking. \u00a0Flying by the seat of your pants is not an innovative strategy.\u00a0 If you are prepared, you will not fear.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">One of my clients told me recently after completing a strategic plan, \u201cI had all these ideas rolling around in my head.\u00a0 Now, I know and all my managers know where we are going and how we are going to get there.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">The innovative thinking was done collaboratively.\u00a0 The strategy was established and unanimously ratified.\u00a0 Now, unexpected problems and opportunities will be dealt with in a systematic manner, without panic.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">2. Strategic planning is only for big companies.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">This is like saying that you only need building plans when you are building a mansion.\u00a0 No contractor in his right mind would agree to that.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">Strategic planning is a tool and all companies need the best tools, used properly, in order to be as successful as they can be.\u00a0 Any company that has at least two tiers of management needs to create a strategic plan so everyone knows how to build the company.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">I have personally been involved with strategic plans for small to mid-size companies.\u00a0 Without exception, the results of the planning process have made these companies much more successful.\u00a0 Literally, millions of dollars have been made by following a properly structured strategic planning process.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">We followed this process at a power plant where I was the CEO.\u00a0\u00a0 The power plant used coal as a fuel and the State of California had pledged to put us out of business because of green house gases.\u00a0 The scrap value of the assets was about $1 million and the cost of site remediation was about $1 million \u2013 net ZERO dollars.\u00a0 Our strategic plan converted the power plant fuel source to biomass and the plant sold for over $50 million.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">3. It costs a lot of money and then just sits in a bookcase, collecting dust.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">True, if it is not done correctly.\u00a0 If strategic planning is done correctly, it will cost a fraction of the improvement in net income.\u00a0 It will only collect dust if management does not have a vested interest in making it work.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">I worked with a CEO who told his management team that strategic planning was a waste of time.\u00a0 In his case, it would have been a waste of time.\u00a0 He was brilliant but he treated his \u201cmanagers\u201d as minions.\u00a0 A strategic plan only makes sense when management functions as a collaborative team.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">One of my clients asked how many of my strategic planning sessions end in big arguments.\u00a0 The answer is that there is a lot of healthy disagreement and conflicting opinions, but in the end, everyone comes to a consensus that they can support.\u00a0 There is a mutual respect among people who work together to accomplish a difficult objective.\u00a0 Businesses that have self-absorbed bosses don\u2019t do strategic planning.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">4. Strategic planning doesn\u2019t work<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">In 1987, Congress created the <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nist.gov\/baldrige\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Baldrige Performance Excellence Program<\/span><\/a><\/span> to help organizations improve their performance and succeed in the competitive global marketplace.\u00a0 Strategic Planning is one of the six essential categories for performance excellence.\u00a0 The organization that was created to recognize performance excellence not only thinks strategic planning works, they insist that strategic planning be part of any excellent organization.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">I am a Certified Examiner for the state-based Baldrige program for California called <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.calexcellence.org\/CAPEProgram.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">CAPE<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 As such, I was privileged to do a site visit of a major health care organization.\u00a0 \u00a0Their strategic plan made them the best in their region.\u00a0 They had happy employees, satisfied customers and they made a lot of money.\u00a0 Strategic planning worked for them, and it will work for you.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">In summary, there are a few reasons that you might choose not to do strategic planning:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">a. You make more than enough money.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">b. Your employees don\u2019t need any focus or purpose.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">c. Your managers never have any good ideas.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">d.
