{"id":346,"date":"2021-02-17T02:48:29","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T02:48:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/allred10.com\/?p=346"},"modified":"2021-03-02T15:21:15","modified_gmt":"2021-03-02T15:21:15","slug":"the-persuasive-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/allred10.com\/?p=346","title":{"rendered":"The Persuasive Leader &#8211; A Summary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-342\" src=\"http:\/\/allred10.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/conflict-405744_640-248x300.jpg\" alt=\"conflict-405744_640\" width=\"248\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/allred10.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/conflict-405744_640-248x300.jpg 248w, http:\/\/allred10.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/conflict-405744_640.jpg 531w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/>After reading each of the articles for the <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/allred10.com\/?p=128\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Ten Best Practices of Exceptional Leaders<\/em><\/a><\/span>, you might summarize the lessons for employees as follows, \u201cDon\u2019t be snarky, stupid or a slacker.\u201d\u00a0 For managers, the summary might be, \u201cDon\u2019t be a self-absorbed jerk.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Actually, the true message of the <em>Ten Best Practices of Exceptional Leaders<\/em> is not one of negativity.\u00a0 It is, \u201cDo your job in a way that helps everyone else do their job.\u00a0 Be kind and be positive.\u00a0 Be a persuasive leader.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">In his book, <em>Primal Leadership<\/em>, Daniel Goleman, PhD, describes six different styles of leadership \u2013 Visionary, Coaching, Affiliative, Democratic, Pacesetting and Commanding.\u00a0 He proposes that the most effective leaders easily move among these styles, adopting the one that meets the needs of the moment.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Goleman\u2019s international bestseller\u00a0<em>Emotional Intelligence<\/em>\u00a0teaches that emotional intelligence\u2014how we handle ourselves and our relationships\u2014matters more than IQ or technical skill.\u00a0 In fact, all of Dr. Goleman\u2019s writings advocate the use of interpersonal feelings and emotions to increase leadership effectiveness.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">His findings corroborate the <em>Ten Best Practices of Exceptional Leaders<\/em>.\u00a0 Leadership is all about connecting with the people you lead.\u00a0 Goleman\u2019s six styles of leadership are more about leadership skills than styles.\u00a0 There are essentially only two leadership styles \u2013 1. Compulsory and 2. Persuasive.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">The Compulsory Leader <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">The Compulsory Leader leads by force, criticism, micromanaging and threats.\u00a0 He\/she also leads with emotion but his\/her emotional leadership is best expressed b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">y<\/span> Niccolo Machiavelli, \u201cIt is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">This leadership style is also known as authoritarian or autocratic, but the term compulsory is more indicative of how this leadership style is performed \u2013 by compulsion.\u00a0 The compulsory style is only effective in emergency situations and only for short periods of time.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Compulsory leaders can be successful if they are very talented or intelligent and no one else in the organization is inclined to challenge their decisions.\u00a0 The problem is that compulsory leaders are never as successful as they could be or for as long as they should be, and they are prone to catastrophic mistakes because there is no one to temper them.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Compulsory leaders are most likely to use these practices:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">10 Practices of Compulsory Leaders<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Do whatever gets the desired result<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Be forceful<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Let people know that making you happy is their number one job.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Allow contention in your workforce to sort out the weakest employees<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Create a work environment that emphasizes work above all else<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Train just enough to get the job done<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Get all you can out of your employees at the lowest possible cost<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Focus on cutting costs rather than increasing revenue<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Create a workplace that is safe enough not to get penalized<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Discipline often and in the most public way to show who is in control<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">There are compulsory leaders that use less compulsion but still maintain absolute control. They see themselves as benevolent monarchs. \u00a0These compulsory leaders treat people more kindly but do not solicit nor heed the counsel of others. \u00a0They create a less toxic but equally stifling work environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">The Persuasive Leader <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">The Persuasive Leader is one who shows by his\/her actions, attitude and speech that the employees are people and not objects to be exploited nor ignored. \u00a0Employees are treated as the most valuable resource of the company.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">This leadership style also includes participative, collaborative, delegative and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Laissez-faire styles. \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">The term persuasive is more indicative of how this leadership style is performed \u2013 by persuading other team members and allowing other team members to persuade the leader. The participative, collaborative,\u00a0<strong>delegative and\u00a0Laissez-faire<\/strong> styles are all slightly different but persuasion is at the root of all of them since there is always more than one person that needs to agree on the final solution.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">The basic premise of persuasive leadership is that all opinions are heard, fully vetted and a decision is made that is satisfactory to all or most participants.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">The Persuasive Leader uses these practices:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/allred10.com\/?p=128\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; font-size: 14pt;\">It is much more difficult to be a Persuasive Leader.\u00a0 It requires a constant effort to regard everyone as a person who is worthy of consideration.\u00a0 It requires treating others as we would like to be treated.\u00a0 It requires self-control and overcoming pride.\u00a0 It is difficult, but the results are worth it.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times;
