Too many adults seem to wander in life with no apparent purpose.\u00a0 They go to work each day and come home to watch TV and drink \u201ca cold one.\u201d\u00a0 They interact with others only when it involves alcohol and pleasure seeking.\u00a0 This lifestyle cannot bring happiness.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

People need to be committed to a cause in order to have purpose in life.\u00a0 Most of our societal problems are the result of so many people following the mantra of the 1970\u2019s, \u201cIf it feels good, do it.\u201d \u00a0True happiness, however, only comes when we commit ourselves to the more worthy cause of God, family and fellowman. \u00a0Some good examples would be Rotary, church, adult literacy, hospital volunteers,\u00a0Boy or Girl Scouts, schools, etc.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back– Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. \u00a0All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. \u00a0Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.\u00a0 Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. \u00a0Begin it now.” \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0-William Hutchison Murray<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Some choose being committed to making as much money as possible; others choose popularity and fame, or a career.\u00a0 These commitments produce a temporary satisfaction and a hollow sense of achievement.\u00a0 True happiness can only be achieved through a commitment to serving others as Christ would have us serve them.\u00a0 One can make money, be popular and have a great career, but following the example of Jesus Christ will yield a far greater reward.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It is not an easy task to help our children understand that they must be committed to blessing the lives of others if they want to achieve true happiness.\u00a0 Teaching this lesson must start with example and the example only works if we know the sweetness of serving ourselves.\u00a0 Sue gives this example, \u201cMy cousin\u2019s older children have a sense of value because they are really needed to help care for their special-needs, younger brothers.\u00a0\u00a0 Everyone needs to feel that they are a contributing member of the family.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We can only teach commitment if we are committed to a worthy cause.\u00a0 Then, as WH Murray\u00a0says, \u201cProvidence moves too.\u00a0 Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.\u201d\u00a0 Our lives will be richer, more fulfilling and happier.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
