Train employees and encourage learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-270\" src=\"http:\/\/allred10.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/team-114655_640-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"team-114655_640\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"http:\/\/allred10.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/team-114655_640-300x231.jpg 300w, http:\/\/allred10.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/team-114655_640-624x480.jpg 624w, http:\/\/allred10.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/team-114655_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>As Sergeant Stryker (John Wayne) said in <em>The Sands of Iwo Jima,<\/em> \u201cLife is tough, but it&#8217;s even tougher if you&#8217;re stupid.\u201d\u00a0 It is harsh language but the concept rings true.\u00a0 The good news is that employees can overcome workplace stupidity if they are given proper training and they are committed to learn.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">When I graduated from college with my degree in accounting, there really was no technology requirement. \u00a0I learned how to use a ten-key adding machine at my first job.\u00a0 The computing power that now resides in an iPad is more than all the computers that occupied the data processing building at my alma mater when I graduated. \u00a0It is absolutely true that if I had not continued to learn, my job opportunities would be severely limited.\u00a0 As a CPA, I am required by the State of California to keep my accounting skills and knowledge current by receiving Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits from classes that I take annually.\u00a0 I also have to be proficient with a computer and business software to remain relevant in today\u2019s business world.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Almost all jobs require initial training and ongoing learning.\u00a0 Employees are more confident and comfortable if they are properly trained.\u00a0 Customers receive a higher quality product\/service from properly trained employees.\u00a0 It has been said, \u201cHire the smile and train the rest.\u201d\u00a0 This philosophy works when the employee has the capacity and the inclination to learn and the company does, indeed, train the rest.\u00a0 Another adage states, \u201cEnergy is more important than IQ.\u201d\u00a0 However, the employee\u2019s energy must be focused on learning the very best job skills.\u00a0 Also, in order for employees to advance in their job, they must show confidence.\u00a0 Confidence is only worthwhile if accompanied by competence.\u00a0 In summary, every good employee must have the proper attitude, training and experience.\u00a0 Good employers play an important role in all these attributes.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">I have worked with a number of companies that emphasize training and learning.\u00a0 Training includes on-the-job training, formal trainers that are brought in to teach specific topics from time to time, paid college tuition programs and establishing personal learning objectives at every annual performance review. Employees at those companies appreciate the training that is provided and often cite the training programs as one of the most important benefits\u00a0that the company offers.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">I once attended a seminar by Robin Sharma, a motivational speaker and best-selling author on the topic of leadership.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYour number one goal is to grow leaders faster than your competitors.\u201d\u00a0 An important element of training is to train the next generation of leaders at your workplace.\u00a0 If you look around and find no one qualified to take over the business, the fault is that of the current leadership.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">The key elements of training for succession are: 1) Find the talent, 2) Train the talent, 3) Pay the talent enough to keep the talent, and 4) Include the talent in transition plan development.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Training is essential to a successful business.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/allred10.com\/?p=346\" target=\"_blank\">A good leader<\/a><\/span> will promote training and learning at all levels.\u00a0 The benefits are to keep the employees skills relevant, to increase employee satisfaction, to provide the best possible product to the customer and to prepare the company for the future.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 14pt;\">Olympic athletes train for a lifetime to be one hundredth of a second faster than their competitors.\u00a0 They train for peak performance.\u00a0 Do the same &#8211; don\u2019t be stupid.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/create\/button\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fkentbrew%2F6851755809%2F&amp;media=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7027%2F6851755809_df5b2051c9_z.jpg&amp;description=Next%20stop%3A%20Pinterest\" data-pin-do=\"buttonPin\" data-pin-config=\"above\"><img src=\"\/\/assets.pinterest.com\/images\/pidgets\/pinit_fg_en_rect_gray_20.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<!-- Please call pinit.js only once per page --><br \/>\n<script src=\"\/\/assets.pinterest.com\/js\/pinit.js\" async=\"\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Sergeant Stryker (John Wayne) said in The Sands of Iwo Jima, \u201cLife is tough, but it&#8217;s even tougher if you&#8217;re stupid.\u201d\u00a0 It is harsh language but the concept rings true.\u00a0 The good news is that employees can overcome workplace stupidity if they are given proper training and they are committed to learn.
